ICOMP Seminar: Protecting the Consumer: Data Privacy in the Digital Age

  • Wednesday, February 29, 2012 6:00 PM 7:30 PM

On 25th January 2012 the European Commission announced proposals to reform and update the 1995 data protection rules to strengthen online privacy rights and boost Europe's digital economy. When the original rules were set just 1% of Europeans used the Internet, whereas today the Internet and digital technology touches almost every aspect of our lives and users are obliged to place an ever increasing amount of their personal data online.

The event will provide a timely opportunity to consider and discuss the proposals set out by the Commission and the reaction from governments, consumers and those organisations that represent them, commercial operators, and others. Furthermore, the discussion will take place in the week before Google is due to implement wide ranging changes to its privacy policies, which in itself has been the subject of much debate.

The seminar will provide a platform to explore these issues, bringing together high level representatives from a broad range of interested stakeholders. The panel of senior figures will be moderated by ICOMP Director Auke Haagsma and we are delighted to be joined by: former Commissioner of the Federal Trade Commission Pamela Jones Harbour, the Information Commissioner Christopher Graham, and senior Which? in-house lawyer Georgina Nelson.
