Interest in the Online Marketplace:
Since we are an interactive agency offering online marketing services to our clients it is of the highest importance for us that the Internet be a well regulated area of business activity. The Internet is rapidly becoming more and more important as a serious channel of communication for individuals as well as for companies and institutions, and we are observing with interest the current developments in the Online Marketplace.
Current thoughts:
’Real life’ regulations do not always fit the online marketplace. Although many questions connected to the Internet as e.g. privacy protection, antitrust issues, intellectual property protection or transparency (all key issues for I-COMP) are theoretically mostly quite well regulated trough national regulators, in practice they do not always work and seem just not to apply to the online world. Internet users do not always seem to realise that rules also need to govern the online space.
Top Tip:
All players (regulators, governments, advertisers, journalists, NGO’s, individual Internet users, etc.) should start to treat the Internet as correspondent to other areas of today’s world and raise awareness of the fact that the Internet is not only for entertainment. It is also a place where businesses are running, where huge amounts of information about ourselves are being stored and it is not unimportant what happens with this information, and who has access to it. It is the place where we pay our bills, where we enter our credit card information, etc. Many Internet users simply do not realise that taking certain actions online may be in breach of existing rules and regulations. While these rules and regulations, such as the ones pertaining to copyright, will need to be adapted for the online world, it is also important to educate users on their existence and purpose. Simply introducing new rules for online commerce may not be enough to create a safe, fair and sustainable place to do business.
