Company: Tradecomet.com, New York, NY

Company Information:
Tradecomet.com was launched in September, 2005 as a business to business search engine indexing and profiling companies around the world that manufacture or distribute products consumed by other businesses. Tradecomet.com is modeled on the enormously successful “Craig’s List” in the consumer sphere. Like Craig Newmark, Dan wrote much of the early programming code himself, working with a small staff, and gathered information about business sites by spidering their websites. The website allows companies to update and maintain information about their firms free of any listing fees.
Interest in the Online Marketplace:
After a career in computer magazine publishing, I began to focus on the internet while working as Vice President of the Integrated Marketing Division at Thomas Publishing Company in New York, publisher of the Thomas Register. I later served as CEO of ThomasB2B.com, a joint venture between Thomas and Miva which offered a specialized B2B advertising platform. While at ThomasB2B, I realized that advertisers seeking to reach Internet users conducting business-oriented searches often considered specialized B2B search websites as a more attractive search advertising option than the predominant generic search websites at the time (Yahoo! and Google) due to the more targeted audiences visiting B2B sites. In 2005, I decided to venture out on my own and launched Tradecomet’s first website Sourcetool.com.

Current thoughts:
The current environment is one in which a single dominant search site is able to exclude competition and hinder innovation. I believe that it’s critically important that a competitive balance be restored to the marketplace in order for the Internet to be truly open marketplace for new products and services.
